In 2023, The Rockingham Planning Commission (RPC) in partnership with the Seabrook Hamptons Estuary Alliance and UNH Cooperative Extension / NH Sea Grant, was awarded funding on behalf of the Town of Seabrook by the NHDES Coastal Resilience grant program to evaluate the town’s existing dune walkways for opportunities to improve public safety and accessibility while preserving and protecting the integrity of the ecological dune systems. The project idea was introduced by Seabrook residents during a meeting with the town’s newly formed Coastal Resilience Team (CRT), which was formed in 2022 for the purpose of bringing town officials, staff and interested residents together to advance the town’s coastal and climate resiliency goals.

Over the past year, the Rockingham Planning Commission (RPC), Seabrook-Hamptons Estuary Alliance (SHEA), and NH Sea Grant have been working closely with the Seabrook Coastal Resilience Team, town staff, board members, and other stakeholders to evaluate Seabrook’s dune walkways. Recently, the team conducted a detailed analysis of the environmental characteristics of the dunes, including an inventory of native, non-native, and invasive species. This research is aimed at informing recommendations to improve both the walkways and the health of the dunes.

This summer, the project team also launched a public survey to better understand how the beach and walkways are used. The survey gathered insights on which walkways are most frequently utilized, what residents and visitors appreciate about the current walkways, and areas where they see room for improvement. These findings will help guide future recommendations for walkway enhancements.

The ultimate goal of the project is to produce a comprehensive assessment of Seabrook’s dune walkways, offering options for structural improvements and restoration opportunities. These recommendations will be used to pursue future funding for design, permitting, and construction projects aimed at enhancing both public access and ecological resilience.

A public forum to present the survey results and environmental assessments will be held on October 24th from 5-7 PM at the Seabrook Community Center. This forum will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about the project, voice their opinions, and discuss their vision for the future of the dune walkways. The project team will also outline the next steps for the project and opportunities to get involved.
